Philippe Starck<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0as a star in a reality show on the BBC, called “School of Design<\/a>“:\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Imagine that you left design school last summer, and have been looking for work ever since. You\u2019re offered the chance to compete for a job with the world\u2019s most famous designer, but there\u2019s a hitch, in fact there are several hitches.<\/p>\n

One is that said designer is Philippe Starck, the aging enfant terrible of French design, who says \u201d\u201d or screams \u201d\u201d what he thinks in fluent, if often incomprehensible Franglais. Another is that when, at your first meeting, you describe a chair you\u2019ve designed as \u201ca sculptural piece,\u201d\u009d he erupts with fury: \u201cI hate it when you say sculpture. You repeat it, and you do not even finish the day.\u201d\u009d But the biggest hitch is that all of this will soon be on television.<\/p>\n

The hapless young designer is one of a dozen hopefuls who are vying for what is clearly the mixed blessing of working chez Starck in \u201cDesign for Life,\u201d\u009d a British reality TV series to be broadcast by the BBC next month. The star is Mr. Starck himself, a shameless show-off who is so brazen, exuberant, charming and silly that he not only outshines the contestants, but reduces them to stricken silence for much of the time.”<\/p>\n
